OUR STORY
IN THE PAST,
People with developmental disabilities were often isolated and treated unfairly. Many were placed in institutions with little hope for a better life, and society generally did not understand or support their needs. Families watched as their loved ones were denied opportunities to learn, grow, and be a part of the community.

AS AWARENESS GREW,
it became clear they needed legal protections to ensure their basic rights and dignity. Ohio responded by passing its Developmental Disabilities Bill of Rights in 1986, an important milestone that helped guarantee these individuals are treated with respect and fairness - just like every other member of the community.
WE NEEDED BETTER.
Some families began to dream of a different future, one where their children could live with dignity, learn skills, and participate fully in society. A group of passionate parents and dedicated professionals united with a shared vision: to create a place of support and opportunity for adults with developmental disabilities.
Originally known as Greene County Residential Services, this initiative blossomed into an organization that expanded ir reach, offering vital residential services in two communities. Through more growth, the agency proudly adopted the name Toward Independence Inc., a beacon of hope and empowerment for all we serve.

Our journey is one of continuous growth, driven by our deep commitment to ensuring that adults with developmental disabilities live their best lives. We build on a strong foundation, always seeking new ways to encourage each person we serve to embrace independence, joy, and opportunity
