Board of Directors

Toward Independence, Inc. (TII) has a volunteer Board of Directors that gives guidance and direction to the agency, ensuring that the mission, vision, and philosophy of the agency are carried out.

Paul Osterfeld





Paul Osterfeld holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Wright State University and attended the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin. He has over 30 years experience in the commercial banking industry. Paul joined the TII Board of Directors in 2007 and was appointed to Vice Chair in 2014 after serving as Treasurer for several years.

Adam Webber practices law at Falke & Dunphy, LLC in Dayton, Ohio. His legal practice focuses on labor and employment matters, estate planning, trusts, and probate. Additionally in his profession, Adam has served in leadership roles with the Dayton Bar Association and the Dayton chapter of the Federal Bar Association. He has a B.A. in Politics and Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh and received his law degree from The Ohio State University. Adam joined the TI Board of Directors in 2013 and was appointed to the office of Secretary in 2014. Adam currently resides with his wife and three sons in Kettering, Ohio.

Dr. Mary Rose Zink





Dr. Mary Rose Zink is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Wilmington College in Ohio. She has over 25 years of experience in higher education and has worked with entities like Panasonic, Armstrong, Xavier University, Capital University, and more. She has taught professional development workshops, been the keynote speaker at various conferences, and has been featured on both television and radio shows for her expertise in analyzing and addressing the unique challenges and dynamic issues that organizations are facing today. Mary Rose joined the TII Board of Directors in 2012 and was appointed to the office of Chair for 2014 after serving initially in the offices of Secretary and Vice Chair. She currently resides in the Cincinnati area.

Julie P. Gentile, M.D.
is Professor of Psychiatry at the Boonshoft School of Medicine, Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio and the Project Director for Ohio’s Coordinating Center of Excellencein Mental Illness/Intellectual Disability. She has been the Professor of Dual Diagnosis for the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, the Ohio Department of Developmental Disability, and the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council since 2003 and has evaluated more than 3,000 individuals with co-occurring mental illness and intellectual disability.
Dr. Gentile is the recipient of both the American Psychiatric Association’s and the National Association for the Dually Diagnosed’s Frank J. Menolascino Award for Excellence in Psychiatric Services for Developmental Disabilities, the Excellence in Contributions to Clinical Practice Award from the National Association for the Dually Diagnosed, and a member ofAlpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. She is also the recipient of the Nancy Roeske Award in Medical Education from the American Psychiatric Association, along with numerous teaching awards. Dr. Gentile has been awarded more than $5,000,000 in grants and contracts to support her work in dual diagnosis since 2003.

Jan Young formally joined our Board in February of 2016. A registered nurse, Ms. Young works as a clinical analyst at Miami  Valley Hospital. She holds her BSN from Wright State University. Ms. Young became interested in the field of  developmental disabilities through her son Benjamin, a TI client, who has cerebral palsy. Ms. Young said she wanted to join TI’s Board so she could “help make things better for people with disabilities while learning how laws, finance and politics impact thequality of their lives.” In her spare time, Ms. Young likes to read, watch zombie movies, garden and dance.

Rakesh Gupta is the newest member of TI’s Board. Mr. Gupta has over 30 years of experience in business management and is the co-founder of three successful technology start-ups. Mr. Gupta first became acquainted with TI about five or six years ago through his nephew Ashish Gupta who is a client of TI. “I was impressed by TIs vision and professionalism in providing services to Ashish,” said Mr. Gupta. After learning there was an opening on the board, Mr. Gupta said, “I felt this to be a great opportunity to fulfill my dream of giving back.” Mr. Gupta first became interested in the field of developmental disabilities in 1976 when he moved to The United States and began his graduate studies at Wright State University. While studying at WSU, he become close to some people with a DD. “I was very impressed to see their strength, hard work, intelligence and spirit to achieve their goals. This really motivated me for the fact that I have no excuse. It was a big lesson for me that helped me work harder to achieve my goals,” Mr. Gupta said.
